Brief Description: This collection consists of diaries and scrapbooks related to Whitehurst’s political and military career. The nineteen bound congressional dairies spanning from 1969 to 1986 are reproductions of the originals held at Washington and Lee University. Six scrapbooks consist of newspaper clippings magazines, pictures and other documents relating to Doctor William Whitehurst’s tenure in the House of Representatives. Twelve scrapbooks, dated, 1968 to 1986, document his political campaigns, and include some memorabilia related to his congressional career. The scrapbooks contain pictures, newspaper clippings, bumper stickers, buttons, magazines, cards, invitations and magazine articles. The military material includes a log book from bombing runs over Japan and Whitehurst’s own military records. Also included are correspondence and medals.

Arrangement:

The collection is broken down into the following series: I. Congressional Diaries, II. Congressional Scrapbooks, III. Campaign Scrapbooks, IV. Military Records, and V. Correspondence, medals and photographs.

Series I: Congressional Diaries. This series contains nineteen bound Congressional diaries dating from 1969 to 1986. These diaries are arranged in chronological order.

Series II: Congressional Scrapbooks. This series has six scrapbooks that contain news clippings, correspondence, invitations and programs, and photos. These scrapbooks primarily consist of news clippings related to Whitehurst’s congressional career. Articles highlight politics and legislation, reelection campaigns, and conservation. Materials date from 1970 to 1984 and are arranged chronologically.

Congressional Scrapbook One, 1970-72: Of note is correspondence with Presidents and Vice Presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Spiro Agnew, as well as FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. Articles on Norfolk Slum clearance and Old Dominion University are also included.

Congressional Scrapbook Two, 1972-74: Of note are news articles related to Watergate.

Congressional Scrapbook Three, 1974-75: Of note are news articles on Watergate and the impeachment of President Nixon, Fort Story, Fort Monroe, Oceana jet noise, Whitehurst's net worth information, the extinction of the Strip on Hampton and Taussig Boulevard in Norfolk, Whitehurst’s trip to South Africa trip, and the construction of the Norfolk federal building.

Congressional Scrapbook Four, 1975-78: Of note is a photo of President Gerald Ford and news articles on America’s bicentennial, Fort Story, and Whitehurst’s visit to China.

Congressional Scrapbook Five, 1976: Of note are articles on Fort Story, the Old Dominion University Kaufman Mall dedication, and the revitalization of downtown Norfolk.

Congressional Scrapbook Six, 1978-1984: Of note are news articles on Whitehurst’s trips to Russia; Fort Monroe; Fort Story; False Cape; Oceana; Back Bay; Navy benefits; inmate benefits; energy, gas, and oil; Iran and the Iranian hostage crisis; German Nazi war art; the Norfolk zoo; and Janie Whitehurst.

Series III: Campaign Scrapbooks. This series has 12 scrapbooks that contain correspondence; greeting cards; invitations and programs photographs; certificates; itineraries; and newspaper clippings from the Virginian Pilot, the Ledger-Star, the Beacon, and the Washington Star. Much of the material relates to foreign trips, U.S. politicians including Presidents and Vice-Presidents, ambassadors, campaigns, and legislation. Additional materials include a collection of stamps and postcards and fact sheets regarding ship launchings and space program fact sheets from Rockwell International on various space craft and missions. The scrapbooks date from 1968 to 1986 and are arranged chronologically.

Campaign Scrapbook One, November 1968-October 1969 (green scrapbook): contains material related to Whitehurst’s election to and career in the House of Representatives during this time. Of note are correspondence and invitations from President Richard Nixon, First Lady Patricia Nixon, Minority House Leader Gerald Ford, and FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover; a 1969 Inauguration program for President Richard Nixon; a 1970 Inauguration program for Abner Linwood Holton, Jr. Governor of Virginia; and articles on Janie Whitehurst.

Campaign Scrapbook Two, Campaign '74 (blue scrapbook): contains material related to Whitehurst’s 1974 campaign for re-election to the House of Representatives.

Campaign Scrapbooks Three and Four, 1969-75: Of note are correspondence and invitations from Presidents, Vice-Presidents, and First Ladies - Richard and Pat Nixon, Gerald Ford, Spiro Agnew, and Nelson Rockefeller; a 1976 holiday card from George and Barbara Bush; photos of Pat Nixon and Mamie Eisenhower; 1969 Inauguration programs for President Nixon and Vice-President Agnew; a Dwight Eisenhower funeral program; 1974 Inauguration program for Mills E. Godwin, Jr., Governor of Virginia; Whitehurst reelection brochures; and articles on Janie Whitehurst.

Campaign Scrapbook Five, 1972-78, 1983: Of note are correspondence and invitations from Presidents, Vice-Presidents, and First Ladies -- Richard and Pat Nixon, Gerald Ford, George and Barbara Bush, Jimmy Carter, and Walter Mondale; Senator Bob Dole; and Virginia Governors Mills Godwin, Jr. and John Dalton. Also included are a 1977 Jimmy Carter Inauguration program, a 1978 Inauguration program for John Dalton, Governor of Virginia, and photos of John Dalton.

Campaign Scrapbook Six, 1978-80: Of note are correspondence and invitations from Presidents, Vice-Presidents, and First Ladies -- Richard Nixon, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter, George Bush, Sr., Gerald Ford, and Walter Mondale; Senator Bob Dole; and Virginia Governor John Dalton.  Photos include President Jimmy Carter, Virginia Governor John Dalton, and trips to the Soviet Union, Germany, France, and Turkey.

Campaign Scrapbook Seven, 1980-81: Of note are correspondence and invitations from Presidents, Vice-Presidents, and First Ladies -- Jimmy Carter, Ronald and Nancy Reagan, George and Barbara Bush; and Virginia Governor John Dalton. Also included is a 1981 Ronald Reagan Inauguration program.  Photos include President Ronald Reagan, Vice-President George Bush, Sr., and trips to Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Singapore, India, and Egypt.

Campaign Scrapbook Eight, 1981-82: Of note are correspondence and invitations from Presidents, Vice-Presidents, and First Ladies -- Ronald and Nancy Reagan and George Bush, Sr. Also of note are a 1982 Inaugural program for Charles Robb, Governor of Virginia, 1981 statement from Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr. that he will not seek reelection, and 1981 programs and memorabilia for the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Yorktown celebration. Photos include President Ronald Reagan and Vice-President George Bush. Campaign Scrapbook Nine, 1983-1984: Of note are correspondence and cards from President Ronald Reagan and Vice-President George Bush. Photos include trips to Germany, Nicaragua, Denmark, Korea, China, and Thailand.

Campaign Scrapbook Ten, 1983-1984: Of note are correspondence and cards from President Ronald Reagan and Vice-President George Bush. Photos include President Ronald Reagan; trips to Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and England; Whitehurst’s 1984 Campaign; and the 1984 Neptune Festival in Virginia Beach (where Whitehurst presided as King Neptune).

Campaign Scrapbook Eleven, 1984-1985: Of note are correspondence and cards from President Ronald Reagan, Vice-President George Bush, First Lady Nancy Reagan, and former President Richard Nixon. Also of note is a 1985 Inauguration program for Ronald Reagan and photos from trips to Yugoslavia, Germany, Turkey, Belgium, Taiwan, Croatia, Bosnia, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Spain, Portugal, and Denmark.

Campaign Scrapbook Twelve, 1986: Of note are correspondence and cards from President Ronald Reagan and Vice-President George Bush.  Photos include President Ronald Reagan, Vice-President George Bush, Virginia Senators Paul Trible and John Warner; the 1986 launching of the U.S.S. Newport News; trips to Turkey and Taiwan; and farewells from Whitehurst’s 18 year term in office.

Series IV: Whitehurst Military Records. This series contains Whitehurst’s military records including combat reports and dispatches; photographs related to his military service; Whitehurst’s aviation log book; World War II historical memorabilia; correspondence; and materials related to reunions of the VT-88 Squadron. The majority of the materials date from 1943-46, though the reunion material and some of the historical compilations post-date World War II. One letter in this series was written in 2005.

Series V: Political Memorabillia. This series includes letters from George H. W. Bush and Lloyd Bennett; campaign memorabilia; material related to a KGB medal and Whitehurst’s notes about it; a medal, scrapbook and correspondence related to Whitehurst returning; 10 naval paintings done by Claus Bergan to Germany; Chinese photo albums; campaign photographs; a newspaper advertisement; and oversized stamp sheets from scrapbook. Material in this series dates from 1968 to 2009.
