The Records of the ODU Associated Writers Program

The Associated Writers Program (AWP) began in 1967 as an organization whose mission has been to support writers and engage in the presence of creative writing in higher educational institutions.  The entrance of creative writing programs into universities was often met with resistance by scholars who believed English departments should focus their attention on studying classic literature.  AWP was created to act as an opposition to this tension and to provide opportunities for young writers.  Old Dominion University was a member of the AWP and participated in bringing their mission to campus, primarily through literary festivals.  For several years, the AWP staff office was located at Old Dominion University where brochures, newsletters and various documents were published.

This collection contains the papers from the Associated Writers Program from 1980-1993.

The bulk of the Associated Writers Program collection contains brochures, newsletters, job listings and degree catalogs from the organization to the University.  The Associated Writers Program attempted to aid writers through contests based on poetry, nonfiction, novel and short fiction.  The collection holds several brochures announcing the winner’s names and published work.  The majority of the collection’s folders are comprised of job listings that AWP often sent out to writers and participating universities.  Other documents include letters asking for financial aid in the wake of federal budget cuts and forms for advertising in newsletters.

Open to researchers without restrictions. Questions on literary property rights should be directed to the Special Collections Librarian.
