7b. Finding databases
PreviousNext

How can I find the best database (or periodical index)?

If you are looking for current articles or articles published no further back than the mid-1980s, you will likely find periodical databases to be your best choice. Approximately 250 such research databases are available to registered ODU students, staff and faculty.

Ask a reference librarian for advice, or go to the library's web page at http://www.lib.odu.edu and under the heading Resources click on Databases. Here you can select the subject area of interest to you and then select from the various databases available.

If you are working on a topic that requires you to find articles published prior to the mid-1980s, you may find printed indexes to be your best choice. Several hundred are available in print. Ask at the library's reference desk for advice on which ones are most appropriate for your topic.
