Information Sources

Many people never go beyond Google when they need information, but there are many more types of information sources you should become familiar with and use.

For some of your assignments, your professor may tell you what types of information sources are required -- usually journal articles and other authoritative sources. You won't find these types of scholarly sources by searching open Google.

Ultimately, which sources you use will depend on your assignment and topic. Standard sources are books and journal articles. Other types of sources include: reference materials (e.g., encyclopedias, almanacs); statistics and raw data; government publications; dissertations; conference proceedings; media sources; and "invisible college" sources.

This section of the module will go into more detail about these sources.
