Spotlight on Scholarship: Physics

Laser demonstration set up by Justin Mason and Tom Hartlove. A small wireless camera captures video of users entering the Learning Commons.
The video signal is transmitted through a laser to a monitor, with no wires attached at the beginning or end points.

This device modulates the amplitude of the laser beam, similarly to how AM radio stations work. This will encode the laser beam with a signal that carries the video information.

This slow-turning motor will break the plane of the laser periodically. When this happens the video on the monitor will cut out. This shows that the laser, not a hidden cable, is carrying the video signal.

The receiver interprets the video signal from the laser and outputs it to the monitor.

Video captured by the camera is sent through the laser to the monitor.
