From Exposition to Development:
The Legacy of Composers at Hampton University
The Perry Library at Old Dominion University and the Harvey Library at Hampton University have come together to raise awareness of the rich music composition heritage in Virginia, specifically Hampton Roads, and to showcase the resources in ODU's Diehn Composers Room and Hampton University's Peabody Special Collections and University Archives.
Materials in the exhibit are from Hampton University Harvey Library and Archives; Old Dominion University Library's F. Ludwig Diehn Composers Room; Sibley Library, Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY; Schomberg Research Center, New York Public Library, and from the collections of individual composers. All materials have been used by permission.
This exhibit was made possible by a grant from The Norfolk Foundation.

A parent exhibition of realia and concert of works fostered the development of this online exhibit. The realia exhibition and all of its peripheral documentation was designed and produced by Karen Meizner, Special Projects Librarian (ODU). Dr. Harvey J. Stokes, Professor of Theory, Composition, and Oboe (HU), was the music director for the concert, while Charles Hillen, Library Specialist (ODU), produced the concert and the online exhibit. Elizabeth Hogue, Humanities Reference Librarian (ODU) designed the invitations, performed much research, and edited much of the written documentation. Carla Rodriguez, Music Librarian (HU) assisted greatly with research and provided much informational support. Amy Douglas, Library Assistant (ODU), served as Public Relations Coordinator and provided clerical support in every regard. The staff of the University Archives (HU), especially its director, Mrs. Maupin, provided gracious assistance with retrieval, usage, and storage of all needed materials housed there.

This collaborative event was inspired by Dr. Jean A. Major, University Librarian of Old Dominion University Libraries, who also sought and acquired grant funding. Loretta O'Brien-Parham, Director of University Libraries (HU), served as the main contact with Hampton University at the administrative level and executed and supervised all legal and procedural matters on its behalf. Virginia O'Herron, Assistant University Librarian for Information Services (ODU), ensured that all deadlines were met and coordinated all projects at the administrative level.
