Series I:  Personal.  This series contains materials related to Mr. Reed’s master’s thesis, resumes, personal correspondence, and news paper clippings related to Mr. Reed and his family. 1940-1983

Series II: Old Dominion College/University.  This series includes materials and information related to ODU which includes Mr. Reed’s involvement with the Baptist Student Union, faculty papers and memos, and studies he conducted concerning ODU.  1958-1982

Sub Series A:  Baptist Student Union.  This sub-series contains information about the BSU and Mr. Reed’s involvement in its activities.

Sub Series B: Faculty. This sub-series includes materials related to the faculty at ODU, with a significant amount of information on the College of Business Administration.

Sub Series C: Studies Concerning the College. This sub-series includes studies related to ODU in which Mr. Reed was a participant, such as the Engineering School, student housing, and parking.

Series III:  Brazil Study.  This series includes materials and information related Mr. and Mrs. Reed’s trip to Brazil where he aided the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture in conducting studies of economic development. 1968-1977

Series IV: City Commerce Studies.  This series includes materials related to economic development with an emphasis on city commerce and banking.  This series does not include restaurants or retail shops.  1940-1975

Series V:  Development.  This series includes materials, research, and surveys of economic development plans in Hampton Roads and other areas, which includes employment surveys, economic development outside of Hampton Roads, minutes from SEARCH meetings, and plans for the development of downtown Norfolk.  1955-1990

Sub Series A:  Development in Hampton Roads. This sub-series includes  materials, research, and surveys of economic development plans within Hampton  Roads, with an emphasis on the development of downtown Norfolk.

Sub Series B:  Development Outside of Hampton Roads. This sub-series  includes materials and research related to economic development outside of Hampton Roads.

Sub Series C:  Metropolitan Studies. This sub-series includes materials related  to metropolitan areas outside of Hampton Roads which were used in its economic development.

Sub Series D:  Population. This sub-series includes studies on population in Hampton Roads with an emphasis on population mobility from 1955-1970.

Series VI:  Government/Politics.  This series includes Mr. Reed’s involvement in the 1960 and 1970 Census, newspaper clippings related to Norfolk Elections, materials from court cases in which Mr. Reed served as an expert witness, and his involvement in the Supreme Court Case concerning the redistricting and reapportionment of Hampton Roads Congressional districts.  1958-1983

Sub Series A:  Census. This sub-series includes materials and research related to the 1960 and 1970 Censuses.

Sub Series B: Elections and Politics. This sub-series includes newspaper clippings and correspondence related to elections and political campaigns in Norfolk.

Sub Series C:  Expert Witness in Legal Cases. This sub-series includes cases in which Mr. Reed serves as an expert witness on matters such as wage compensation for disabled workers.

Sub Series D:  Redistricting. This sub-series includes materials related to Mr. Reed’s involvement in the 1971-1972 Supreme Court Case concerning the redistricting of voting districts in Hampton Roads.

Series VII:  Housing Studies.  This series includes studies for housing development in Hampton Roads, with an emphasis on military housing.  1960-1976

Sub Series A:  Civilian Housing. This sub-series includes civilian housing  materials which includes studies on home ownership in Hampton Roads.

Sub Series B:  Military Housing. This sub-series includes materials related to  military housing, with an emphasis on the shortage of housing for members of the Navy stationed in Hampton Roads.

Series VIII:  Media Related Studies.  This series includes studies and research related to radio stations, newspaper advertisements, and other media outlets.  1959-1972

Series IX:  Public Schools Studies.  This series includes material related to Hampton Roads public schools’ growth and development, with an emphasis on Norfolk Public Schools. Mr. Reed was a member of the Parents’ Study Committee for Norfolk Public Schools1961-1971

Series X:  Recreational Studies.  This series includes research and other materials related to recreation in Hampton Roads, including studies on skating rinks, Seashore State Park, and the Norfolk Zoo.  1963-1970

Series XI:  Retail/Commercial Studies.  This series includes studies and research conducted and/or collected by Mr. Reed related to retail and commerce mainly in the Hampton Roads area, including healthcare, marketing research, restaurants, and shopping venues.  1952-1972

Sub Series A:  Healthcare. This sub-series includes studies related to healthcare, hospitals, and physicians.

Sub Series B:  Marketing Research. This sub-series includes research related  to marketing strategies.

Sub Series C:  Restaurants. This sub-series includes research and surveys for development of restaurants in Hampton Roads. 

Sub Series D:  Shopping Venues. This sub-series includes research and surveys for the locations and marketing strategies of shopping venues in Hampton Roads.

Series XII: Oversized Maps. Annotated Hampton Roads maps 1959-1969.

Abstract

Thomas Jackson Reed began his career at the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary in 1957 as an Associate Professor in the School of Business Administration. He taught courses in Economics, Business, and Statistics. The collection documents his academic life and his work as a consultant in urban planning, land use, political re-districting and retail marketing.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains materials related to Old Dominion University and Hampton Road’s economic development collected by Thomas Jackson Reed, associate professor of business administration.  Included are correspondence, news clippings, research proposals and studies conducted by Mr. Reed.  The collection dates from 1935 to 1990.
